Creating finger waves

In a practical hair lesson we were shown how to make finger waves in the hair.

Tools/products needed to create finger waves:

  • Water spray
  • Hair polisher and/or hair gel
  • Pin tail comb
  • Long silver sectioning clips (preferable) or hair grips
  • Hair dryer

Here is a step by step of how to create finger waves:

1.      Section the area of hair that you want to create the finger waves with.
2.      Spray the hair down so that the hair is wet – this will make the hair easier to work with.
3.      Brush the hair through using a pin tail comb – this will ensure that there aren’t any knots in the hair.
4.      Using your pin tail comb you should brush some gel through the hair – this will hold the hair in place once you have finished the finger waves and the hair is dry/set.
5.      To create the first finger wave at the parting of the hair you should brush the comb through the hair, away from the face, placing your middle finger just above the comb. Then you should push
the hair upwards pressing the pin tail comb touching your finger above holding the hair in place. You should then use your index finger to hold the bottom part of the wave.
6.      Once you are happy with the shape of the first finger wave you should use the long silver sectioning clip to hold the wave in place with your hand you were using the pin tail comb with. You should also then brush through all the rest of the hair, ensuring you’re holding the waved section so that it doesn’t fall out of place.
7.      To create the next wave you should place the pin tail comb in the hair touching the scalp, this time combing the hair in the opposite direction to create a wave.
8.      Once you are happy with the shape of the wave use your middle finger to hold above the wave and your index finger to hold below the wave.
9.      You should then use another long silver sectioning clip to hold the wave in place.
10.  Repeat steps seven, eight and nine to create the finger waves until you meet the jaw line.
11.  Once you have met the jaw line you should then style the ends as desired.
12.  You can then use a hair dryer from a distance to dry the hair off.
