Introduction to Claudia and Quentin – gothic horror fashion

For the last part of this assignment I will be exploring more into gothic horror fashion. Two characters called Claudia and Quentin will be my main focus of my blogging, I will still be using references of Gothic Horror for inspiration.

Claudia and Quentin will need to be created for a Music video, therefore I will be exploring all types of music videos that have reference of gothic horror within them.

About Claudia and Quentin
Claudia is a young woman in her twenties. As a child she was left alone a lot, therefore didn’t have much parental guidance. In her younger years she developed an unhealthy love for horror films, she began to believe that horror films were reality.

All the scenes of the music video would be to take place in her apartment. Due to her amazement with horror movies she often dresses like the characters from the movies she watches. I will research horror films that I can reference for my creation of Claudia.

Quentin is Claudia’s imagery boyfriend. Just like her own appearance Quentin’s appears different depending on Claudia’s mood and vision.

During our introduction lesson to Claudia and Quentin Sharon (my lecturer) showed us some music videos open up our thoughts about the tasks. Below are the music videos she showed us that have elements of gothic horror.

Michael Jackson - Thriller (1982)

Rihanna - Disturbia (2009)

Creating masculine hair

It is important to know how to be able to create masculine hair from mid length to long hair. In a lesson we were told to create a masculine hair style on our dolly heads. This post shows how i tried to create a masculine hairstyle from long hair.

Products/tolls needed to create this look:
  • Hair serum
  • Curling tongs
  •  Hairspray
  •  Pins and grips

Here is a step by step of how to create this look:
  1. Section the hair with a side parting from the front and the back from the ears to the top of the scalp/head.
  2. Clip the two front sections out of the way.
  3. Using the curling tongs create barrel curls out of small sections of the hair going down to the ears of both front sections of hair. Hold in place using grips.
  4. Create a vertical roll with the back section of hair. To ensure this section is as flat to the head as possible you should make the roll as wide as you can. Use pins and grips to hold in place.
  5.  Remove the pins from the front sections of the hair and brush out the curls.
  6. You should then begin to connect the front sections of hair with the vertical roll in the back. You can use serum in the hair to help keep the hair smoothly together.
  7. Hold all of one side section together and curl the ends up and place it on top of the head hidden behind the top/front shape of the hair.
  8. Repeat this for the other side front section of hair.
  9. Use hairspray to hold in place.

Here are the images of my final masculine hair look that I created in class.

Creating dirty teeth, hair and face

Products needed to create this makeup look:

  • Supracolour pallet
  • Tooth enamel – from Kryolan available in different colours
  • Colour spray – from Kryolan in grey and brown
  • Glycerine
  • Dry shampoo
  • Hair styling wax
  • Cotton buds
  • Stipple sponge

Here is a step by step of how to create this makeup look:

1.      Apply brown Supracolour to the face using the stipple sponge in a dabbing motion around the hairline and mouth.
2.      Apply brown Supracolour around the lips and eyes using a small brush.
3.      Spray the kryolan colour spray directly to the face, ensure that you are holding the spray at least 20cm away from the face, your models eyes should also be closed.
4.      You can smudge the spray to look like mud if desired with your hand while the spray is still wet.

5.      You should then wipe the tooth dry using a cotton bud, the tooth that you want to stain must be
Tar stained teeth
dry before applying the Kryolan tooth enamel. You should ensure that you shake the bottle before use.
6.      You can apply some hair styling wax to the roots of the hair; this will create the effect of dirty and greasy hair.
7.      Apply dry shampoo to the hair to create a dusty and dirty effect.

8.      You can apply glycerine to the face using a stipple sponge to create the effect of sweat.

Creating scarring

Products that can be used to create different types of scarring:
  • Supracolour
  • Collodian – used for scarring and cut lips
  • A pallet knife
  • Tuplast – can be used for old, raised scarring (non flexible)
  • Derma shield (protects the skin)
  • Translucent powder

One thing to remember when creating scars with makeup is that brighter coloured scars are new scars and dull coloured scars would be older. Before working on some ones skin with these harsh products you should always apply a barrier cream to the area you will be working on. In this case you should use the Derma shield.
Using collodian.
How to create scarring using collodian:
1.      Apply some collodian to skin
2.      Use a pallet knife to pinch between the area of skin to create a ‘wrinkle’ and tighten effect the skin.
3.      Use a cool hair dryer to dry the area quickly
4.      Repeat this three of four times to create layers of the effect.
This type of scarring can be made to look like either new or old scarring, depending weather you colour the area using Supracolour.

How to create raised scarring using Tuplast:
1.      Place the top of the tube tuplast on the skin and lay it onto the skin. This will create a scar which looks like it could have been created with a knife.
2.      Allow the tuplast time to dry.
3.      You should then colour the scarring with Supracolour. A more realistic effect can be created by dabbing colour on top of the tuplast.

4.      You should then powder the area to create an even more realistic effect.

Using tuplast

Using moulds to create scarring

Here is a list of products needed to create this makeup look:
·
  • Set of plastic mould/scars (like picture shown to the right)
  • Gelatine or latex

  •  A big rounded powder brush
  • T-pin
  • Translucent powder
  • Prosade and prosade remover
  • Cotton buds
  • Supracolour

Here is a step by step of how to use moulds:
1.      Create the mould using either gelatine or latex and allow to cool/set.
2.      Once the gelatine or latex is dry/set you can then begin to remove the mould from the set using the t-pin, you can also use the brush with translucent powder to lift the mould from the set.
3.      Ensure that your models area of skin that you will be applying the mould to is clean.
4.      Apply some prosade to the bottom of the set mould and place onto the skin.
5.      Use a cotton bud to set the edges as close to the skin as possible. Use the cotton bud in a rolling motion around the edges to stick it.
6.      Allow the prosade to dry and then colour the wound/scar as desired using supracolour – adding bruising and/or redness.
