Creating a strong silhouette through hairstyle – a vertical roll
Seemas demo of a
vertical roll.

Tools needed to create this hairstyle:
  • Heated curling tongs
  • Dry shampoo
  • Hair pins and grip
  • Pin tail comb
  • Postiche brush
  • Hairspray

Here is a step by step of how to create this hairstyle:
  1. Section the hair with your pintail comb creating two front sections with a middle parting from the crown of the head to the back of the ears. Clip the two front sections using sectioning clips.
  2.  Spray dry shampoo at the roots of the hair as this will help with back combing of the hair a few stages later.
  3. Using heated curling tongs begin curling the top section of the back section in the correct direction that you will want the hair to sit. Use the heated curling tongs to create a barrel curl, this will give root lift and curled ends.
  4. Once the hair is curled and you can feel the heat through the tongs through the hair, remove the tongs and roll the hair back into the barrel curl shape and using hair grips to hold in place.
  5. Continue to do this below the first barrel curl, creating your barrel curls like brick work.
    'brick work' directed barrel curls.
  6. The section behind the back of the ears you can then direct the barrel curls rolling into the head horizontally. Do this on either side, the picture on the right shows how your finished set should look.
  7. Once the hair is no longer warm, remove all the hair grips to release the barrel curls and begin backcombing the hair at the root using your pintail comb, this will give more root lift.
  8. Begin smoothing the right section of the hair with a postiche brush, the hair must almost be flat to the head and then cross pin with hair grips like shown below. This will give more structure and security to the final look.
Cross pinned grips in the hair
  9. Begin smoothing the left side section of hair into itself. Use your thumb at the nape of the neck to hold the hair in place rolling all this section of hair inwards.
  10. Once you have your desired shape you can then secure the shape with hair pins ensuring they are secured into the hair by pushing them into the cross section of grips underneath.
  11. You can then create any desired shape with the two front sections you can create any shape which may be desired to work into the back section of hair. You can secure these sections of hair into the back section using pins and grips.
  12. To finish the look, spray with hairspray to hold the hairstyle in place.

Finished back section of vertical roll
As a vertical roll in the hair gives a very strong silhouette shape, i would like to play around more with this hairstyle adapting it to be more fitting for Miss Havisham and Estella's character. I will consider maybe using the basics of this hair style for my assessment.
