Project evaluation

Throughout the beginning of the project while designing my Miss Havisham and Estella I tried to keep my designs as relevant to the Victorian era as possible. I wanted to keep my Miss Havisham very accurate to the fashions of the period as well as the personal hygiene problems of the time.

I began by researching the fashions for Victorian women during that specific era. I also looked at all the diseases the infections that were around during the Victorian era. My main focus for my Miss Havisham design was to represent Miss Havishams poor personal hygiene. I chose my final hair style for Miss Haviaham as an up do as I thought it was appropriate for a bridal hair style of the Victorian era.

For the continuity assessment I found it very difficult to try and recreate my Miss Havisham design exactly the same as the first time. This is something that I will need to work on for working in the industry.

While designing my Estella I felt a lot more inspired and excited about this part of the project. I wanted to create a more contemporary look for Estella that still had reference to the Victorian era as well as Estella’s evil characteristics. I loved how I could develop the reference from the BBC3 Great Expectations series – butterflies.

When it came to developing ideas for Claudia and Quentin I began looking at all different types of music videos which had Gothic reference. From the start of this part of the project I knew I wanted to keep a contemporary feel with a high fashion take to the project.

For my Claudia I began looking at gothic reference within the fashion industry. I enjoyed looking at editorial fashion images that have a gothic reference. I found that trendhunter.com was a brilliant website for fining information and inspiration images.

I really enjoyed creating my final hair style for Claudia as the design had a lot of height to it. If I was to recreate this design again I think I would develop the makeup to be more striking and defining of the face. I chose to use the same model for both my Claudia and Quentin as I wanted to show how Quentin was a reflection of Claudia’s crazy imagination.

I was hugely inspired by The Mad Hatter from Time Burtons Alice in Wonderland while I was designing my Quentin. However I developed the idea to have a more gothic reference to it. When I created my final Quentin design on my model I thought that the makeup design didn’t suit my models face as well as I had hoped.

I felt that I rushed creating my final looks for Claudia and Quentin as I left the practical work until last minute, when I was unable to create the final designs that I had imagined in my mind. If I had the chance to recreate my Claudia and Quentin I would also choose a more appropriate model that would fit better to my final designs.

Working with my final designs

Before creating my final designs I wanted to practice my designs on myself and on my dolls head. When practicing my designs i tried a few different techniques and looks to see what I thought worked best.

Claudia makeup:

Claudia hair:

When I began experimenting with my final designs on ym dolls head I thought it would be interesting to see if I could develop my design further. I chose to put a 50's victory roll in the front of the hair, however i decided not to use a victory roll for the final look as I felt it took an element of height away from the design.

    Design ideas

    Four Claudia face charts:

    First design idea

This design includes highlighting and contouring in a natural skin tone. Black solid eye shadow with skinny black eyebrows with a black and purple ombre lip. For this design I would also use fake blood to show a more graphic idea of Claudia. I really like the ombre lip idea from this design.

     Second design idea

This design includes highlighting and contouring of the face in a natural skin tone. A black and grey smokey eye, Black lips with whispy brown eye brows. The eye shadow is my favorite part of this design.

    Third design idea

This design includes heavy contouring of the face with highlighting. Black eyeliner on the top and bottom of the eyes - like cats eyes, then with eye shadow dusting the cat eyes away. An important part of this design is also the 'evil' eyebrows. This makeup design also includes a black and red ombre lip. The lips and the eyebrows are my favorite part of this design.

    Fourth design idea

This design includes highlighting and contouring of the face in a natural skin tone. Also with a black and grey smokey eye and matte black lips. The eyebrows to this design are also very whispy.

    Hair design idea for Claudia:

This hair design has sleek hair going into a big bun at the top of the head using the natural hair.  I would use padding and dark synthetic hair to create the top structure of the hair. I would wrap dark synthetic hair around the padding and then use a lighter tone of synthetic hair to wrap around the top structure and at the bottom of the bun.

    Four Quentin face charts:

     First design idea

This design includes highlighting and contouring of the face using grey and white tones. A small amount of grey eye shadow around the inside top of the nose. The main features of this design are the strong black blows fading down the nose and matte black lips.

     Second design idea

This design includes highlighting and contouring of the face using grey and white tones. I would also enhance contouring around the mouth. This design also has a slight smokey eye using grey with winged eyeliner on the top and bottom of the eyes. The eyebrows of this design would be black in a whispy shape. The lips would be matte black into white with an ombre effect.

    Third design idea

This design incles highlighting and contouring of the face also using white and grey with a hint of black. I would also enhance contouring around the mouth. I would include grey eye shadow on the eye lids and below the water line. This design includes strong defined black whispy brows with matte black lips.

    Fourth design idea

This design includes highlighting and contouring of the face using more natural tones. The eyes of this design would be grey and fading down the cheeks. The eye brows would be black in a very strong defining shape. The lips of this design would be the same colour of the natural skin to fade into the face.

    Hair design for Quentin:

This hair design for Quentin is using a black tombola hat as a prop to the hair style. With the models natural hair I would use either curling tongs or hot sticks to create curly/frizzy hair to pin and grip in place around the bottom of the hat.
    Main pictures for my inspiration

Here are some images that I have posted on my Pinterest account for my mood boards of Claudia and Quentin.

For my Claudia designs I want to keep makeup fairly simple with a Gothic feel. I love Avante Garde hair.. therefore I want to include this for Claudia.

For my Quentin designs I feel really inspired by Tim Burtons Mad Hatter, and the episode of BBC3's Hair episode where Katy created a Mad Hatter from hair. I will also be keeping a Gothic reference to all of my Quentin designs.
